Thank You, Mexico City!
Thanks so much to everyone who came out to support us in Mexico City last weekend.  We had an amazing time and met a lot of really cool people.  We can't wait to come back!

Surveillance "Oceania" Album Now Shipping
The debut album from my new side-project Surveillance is now shipping!  You can grab your CD copy from the Assemblage 23 Online Store, or if you prefer to buy your music digitally, visit the Surveillance Bandcamp or any other popular digital retailer.  Pre-orders from the IndieGoGo contributors will ship first, with orders placed through the Assemblage 23 Online Store to follow.

Upcoming Tom Shear DJ Dates
I've got a bunch of DJ gigs coming up, so have a look to see if I'm coming to your city.

• Saturday, April 12th - Seattle, WA - @ The Mercury - Surveillance Release Party
• Friday, May 9th - Tulsa, OK - @ The IDL Ballroom - Assimilation 6th Anniversary
• Wednesday, May 14th - Salt Lake City, UT - @ Area 51 - Temple
• Wednesday, May 28th - San Jose, CA - @ San Jose Skate - Final Wumpskate Event
• Friday, July 11th - New Orleans, LA - @ Howlin' Wolf - Southern Gothic Festival
• Saturday, July, 19h - Jacksonville, FL @ Eclipse

"Oceania" is the debut album from the Assemblage 23 side-project Surveillance.  Featuring a darker, more EBM-focused sound than A23, Surveillance explores themes of dystopian, authoritarian futures examined in classic novels such as "1984" and "Brave New World" and draws parallels to the world we are living in today. The digital version of the album is already available, but now you can place a pre-order for the CD version.  The album is slated to ship during the last week of March.  Contributors to the IndieGoGo campaign from last summer will have their CD's shipped first, and pre-orders placed here will then ship in the order they were received.  Place your pre-order to reserve your copy today!  (CDs can also be signed on request, just say so in the "special instructions" part of the order form.

Surveillance Album Released On Bandcamp, Other Digital Outlets And Physical CD to Follow
It’s been a while since the last update, and  that was mainly due to me being locked up in the studio finishing up work on “Oceania”, the debut album from my new side-project “Surveillance”.  I’m happy to report the album is now not only finished, but available for sale on Bandcamp.  The album should be available on other digital retailers such as iTunes, Amazon MP3, Google Music, Rhapsody, Spotify, and more around March 3rd, with the physical CD being available shortly after that.  The staggered format releases are a bit odd, I realize, but given that the project took a little longer than planned, I wanted to make it available to those who wanted it as soon as possible.  When I have a definite date back from the pressing plant, I will open pre-orders in the Assemblage 23 Online Store for the CD.

Tom Shear Co-Produces Track for Polaroid Kiss
Yours truly finished up mixing and co-producing a track for the upcoming Polaroid Kiss single.  The track, entitled “Walk the Room” and features The Church’s  Steve Kilbey on vocals.  Mari Kattman, who also appears on the Surveillance album also provided some awesome backing vocals.  A spring release is planned.

Tom Shear Produces Gothicicles Track
I also recently finished up production of a song for the Gothsicles for a song called “Moon Knight is Cool”.

Assemblage 23 Remix News
I recently completed a remix for Cyferdyne, as well as a remix of A23’s “The Last Mistake”, which appears on the Resistanz Festival 2014 Soundtrack.  Another remix of “The Last Mistake” by German remixer extraordinaire Dominatrix will appear on the upcoming “Electronic Savoirs Vol. 3” compilation on Metropolis Records.

More Live Shows Added
In addition to the string of shows we will be doing in Europe this April,  I am happy to announce to additional live show coming up.  Saturday, March 29th, we’ll be performing at Dada X  in Mexico City.  Also, we will be headed to New Orleans on July 12th at Howlin’ Wolf as headliner for the Southern Gothic Festival.  I’ll also be DJing on one of the other nights,

November 12th will see the release of "The Methusalah Tree", the latest release from Vancouver's iVardensphere.  I was proud to contribute lyrics and vocals to the track "Society of Dogs" and to collaborate for the first time with vocalist Mari Kattman of Day Twelve.  The track came out fantastic and Mari's vocals take things to a whole new level. I'm very excited for everyone to hear it.

"Bruderschaft's 'Return' Finally Has a Release Date!
I first recorded the vocals for Bruderschaft's follow-up to "Forever" entitled "Return" way back in 2004, right around the time I was finishing up work on Assemblage 23's "Storm".  After numerous delays, I am happy to say the release has expanded into a full-length with many other awesome guest vocalists and finally has a release date.  Contains a new version of "Forever" with vocals by yours truly as well.  Reserve your copy now!

Tom Shear Completes Two Mixing Projects
Work wrapped up a couple weeks ago on mixing down an EP for Where the Sun is Silent, the new project from backandtotheleft's Robert RisCassi and vocalist Share Terpening (Trotski's Blok), as well as an album for Watch Clark, the new project from Static Engine's Paul Furio.

And Finally, Some Info on Surveillance!

It's been awhile since I've had any updates on the upcoming debut release from my new side project Surveillance, so here is a heap of information!

•  The album's title is Oceania, a reference to George Orwell's classic novel "1984".  As may be becoming clearer now, the album is rife with dystopian themes in the emerging surveillance society the world is evolving into.
•  Above is your first peak at the artwork done by the lovely and talented Sam Pfannkuche.
•  If you're on Facebook, please "like" the new Surveillance Fan Page.
•  While the song order has yet to be determined, the album will consist of 10 tracks with the following titles:  I Was There, Corridor, Rise, Husk, Homeland Security, Voyeur, Eye to Eye, Thoughtcrime, Belief, and Panic.
•  The sound of the album runs all over the place from pitch black dark synth-pop to aggressive old school EBM. It's an album that has one foot in the past, and one firmly planted in the future.  Definitely the most "analog" album I've done, and I found myself reaching for retro production techniques here and there to evoke the era of the Cold War.  There are elements of Assemblage 23 to be found as well, but overall, the feeling of this album is much different.
•  Now the bad news.  I had orginally set a goal of having the album released on October 15th.  As happens with many crowd-funded projects, however, I underestimated the amount of time I needed a bit.  So right now, I'm aiming to get it out in mid to late November.  I apologize for the added wait, but hopefully you'll agree that spending a little extra time to get things right will be worth the wait in the long run.  At this point, most of the music is recorded and all that remains is some vocal recording, a few lyrics, and some mixing.

Update on Surveillance
Although I managed to mention it just about everywhere else, I was late in mentioning that the Indiegogo campaign I ran for my upcoming side project Surveillance came to a close at an amazing 600% of my goal.  I went into this as my first experience with crowd-funding and really had no idea what to expect.  The result was so far above what I could've even dreamed, I am still dumb-founded.  Work on the album continues, as does my outreach to some other artists for the digital remix album.  I've hired Samuel Pfannkuche to create the artwork for the album and remix album, as well as for the limited edition "contributors only" t-shirt.  I have begun contacting contributors to fullfill perks I can fullfill now and have already begin on the first remix.  If you haven't heard from me yet, don't panic.  This was a huge campaign, so it's going to be a lot for me to manage, but with the faith you all showed in me and this project, I have no doubt I'll pull it off!  (Oh, and if you didn't download the free Joy Division cover I did back in 1996 that I promised if the campaign ended above $15,000, you can grab it here!)

News - 6/21/13

My "Surveilance" Campaign Named Indiegogo's "Campaign of the Day"
I really didn't know what to expect when I launched the campaign to raise $2,500 with the goal of putting out an album by my new side project Surveillance.  Not only had I reached that goal in 12 hours, but the campaign is now closing in on $12,000 raised.  To say the response has exceeded my expectations would be an understatement.  This evening, I received an email from Indiegogo informing me that my campaign would be their "Campaign of the Day" for tomorrow, Saturday, June 22nd.  This means the campaign will be featured on their Twitter, Facebook, and other social media, giving a huge boost of exposure.  I couldn't have done this without you and the incredible faith you've put in this project at such an early stage.  So, thank you.

Additionally, I announced earlier today, that if the campaign breaks the $15,000 mark by the time it closes, I'll release a cover I did of Joy Division's "Interzone" that I recorded way back in 1996 for free on Soundcloud.  So please feel free to spread the word to your friends if you haven't already.  And if you have, thanks!

Haven't checked it out yet?  Go here and download your free track!

The "Help Tom Get a New Laptop" Sale!

A few weeks ago when I was preparing for my gigs in Arizona, I did something most of us have probably done at least once. I reached for a glass of water sitting next to my laptop, and instead ended up spilling it. Only about a thimble full hit my laptop, but as luck would have it, those few drops hit the fan which then spread the liquid damage to every square inch of the interior. Although frustrated, I decided I'd use the money from the Arizona gigs to get a replacement when I returned. As luck would have it, immediately upon my return, our oldest cat required surgery and the bill just happened to add up to the almost the exact cost it would have been to replace my laptop. "Tom, you whiny little girl, what does this have to do with ME?" I hear you saying?

What it means for you is I'm having a sale on the Assemblage 23 Online Store ( for the entire month of March to help raise the funds! Here is what's on sale:

• Assemblage 23 Ultimate Fan Set - $95 (regularly $100)

• Assemblage 23 Gold Fan Pack - $75 (regularly $80)

• 23db Fan Pack - $40 (regularly $45)

• Contempt, Failure, Defiance, Storm, Meta, Compass, or Bruise CDs - $12.99 (regularly $13.99)

• Assemblage 23 US Tour 2012 Tee - $10.99 (regularly $15.99)

• Assemblage 23 Aussie Baby Tee - $10.99 (regularly $15.99)

• Assemblage 23 "Bruise" Hoodie - $30.99 (regularly $39.99)
